Introduction — What Is Honor?
- Honor is recognizing and valuing the God-given 1 of others.
- Honor recognizes both the person and the 2 of God upon their life.
- Honor is not merely an attitude; it determines how we receive and respond.
- Respect is earned, but is honor earned?
- We must distinguish between honoring a person's worth and approving of their 3.
1Honor Positions Us to Receive
40“He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. 41He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.
- Jesus connected receiving His messengers with receiving 4.
- How we receive someone reveals what we 5 in them.
- The grace we recognize in others can become a 6 in our own lives.
- Honor positions our hearts to receive what God desires to minister through others.
2Familiarity — The Enemy of Honor
1Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown. 2The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked, “Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?” 3Then they scoffed, “He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.” They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. 4Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.” 5And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then Jesus went from village to village, teaching the people.
- They knew Jesus as the carpenter but failed to recognize Him as 10.
- Their familiarity contributed to 11 and 12.
- They witnessed His wisdom yet questioned His authority.
- Jesus 13 at their unbelief.
- Familiarity can cause us to focus on humanity while overlooking God's grace.
3Honor Recognizes God's Presence and His Ways
1Again David gathered all the choice men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, whose name is called by the Name, the LORD of Hosts, who dwells between the cherubim. 3So they set the ark of God on a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart. 4And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill, accompanying the ark of God; and Ahio went before the ark. 5Then David and all the house of Israel played music before the LORD on all kinds of instruments of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals. 6And when they came to Nachon’s threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. 7Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error; and he died there by the ark of God. 8And David became angry because of the LORD’s outbreak against Uzzah; and he called the name of the place Perez Uzzah to this day. 9David was afraid of the LORD that day; and he said, “How can the ark of the LORD come to me?” 10So David would not move the ark of the LORD with him into the City of David; but David took it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 11The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite three months. And the LORD blessed Obed-Edom and all his household. 12Now it was told King David, saying, “The LORD has blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with gladness. 13And so it was, when those bearing the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, that he sacrificed oxen and fatted sheep. 14Then David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod. 15So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet.
- David had a desire to bring the Ark into Jerusalem.
- Their intentions were good, but their methods disregarded God's 17.
- Uzzah's actions revealed the seriousness of treating holy things 18.
- David initially responded with fear.
- Obed-edom welcomed the Ark into his household, and his household was 19.
- David later corrected the manner in which the Ark was transported.
13Because you did not carry it at the first, the LORD our God made an outburst on us, for we did not seek Him according to the ordinance.” 14So the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel. 15The sons of the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles thereon, as Moses had commanded according to the word of the LORD.
4Honor Recognizes Extraordinary Worth
6Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, 7There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. 8But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? 9For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. 10When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. 11For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. 12For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. 13Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.
- The woman recognized the worth of Jesus.
- Her expression of honor was 21.
- Others called it waste; Jesus called it a 22.
- Honor is not always understood by those who do not recognize the same value.
- Jesus declared that her act would be remembered wherever the Gospel was preached.
Part 1 Conclusion
The question is not simply whether God has placed something valuable in someone's life. The question is whether we have the 24 to recognize it and the 25 to receive it.
We must refuse to allow familiarity, offense, pride, or unbelief to prevent us from receiving what God desires to accomplish in our lives.
